1968-1972 Bacon, John W. E-mail: JBacon1698@aol.com , Waldoboro, ME./Deer Isle, ME. Started college for surveying and forestry at Paul Smiths College, Paul Smiths NY. in '73 finished in '75. Went to work for a CT. firm of consulting engineers, worked on a surveying crew and did drafting and field work 'til '77.Lived in N.O. Louisiana for a coupla yrs surveying, Wayyy too hot and flat for me.... Moved to north GA. Have been in work, for myself, as a contractor since 1980.. Finally sold my house in Ga. and married the gal I'd been searching for my whole life. Now designing a second house, to retire into, on an island in Penobscot Bay. The old elbows/shoulders have taken a beating over the years as a contractor, so I've added a slower life of building custom shutters www.meshutterworks.com  and a few custom cabinets to help my body maintain it's svelte appearance :{ Stowe School was the best of my troubled younger formative years and I have so many good memories from then, I still maintain some contact w/Stefan Slaby-(has his own Import car repair shop in Hope, PA), Jon Adams-(has his own landscaping/caretaker business in Naples, FL), Rubber Ducky(Jeff Dew)(has his own antique business in Branford, CT.) used to see Dave Hazlett occasionally. and still wonder about some others, like Lenny Kaplan, Jay Polikoff, and Ben Brown to name a few.  If any of you are ever in the MidCoast Maine area don't hesitate to give me a shout, I'm in the Waldoboro phone book and would not think twice about having a couple "adult beverages" and remembering older times. Hope we all are moving gracefully into our Golden Years,,, JB
1969 - 1971 - Kurt Heinzmann,  email kheinzmann@comcast.net After 11 years in ME, CO, CT, and MA making bricks, fixing cars, cooking, maintaining railroad track, and designing automatic factory machinery, I attended college and in 1989 earned my MS in mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. I live in Francestown, NH with my wife Marsha (Gibson) and son Joshua (born 1990), who will start college this fall (2009). I work in Manchester, NH. Although my vocation is engineering, my avocation has always been, and always will be, making pottery
1969 -1971 - John Rubino, E-mail: john@structuralsculpture.com , After Stowe School I went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence Italy for a year, and then the University of Miami for 4 years where I got a BFA in Sculpture. Moved around for a few years, Washington, D.C., back to Florida, NY & then Stowe. Have been back in the Stowe area since 1979. Have done many forms of art since school, all have been 3 dimensional, and I always come back to sculpture. I currently live in Morrisville where my wife, Whitney and I, have a home with two rental apartments, and a studio space. The studio is about 3000 square feet, half of which has a twenty-foot high ceiling. I’m in heaven.

1970-1972 - Shipherd Densmore, Email: shiprig@comcast.net , Hey I came across the site quite by accident and thought I should add my five cents. I left Stowe and spent the next five or six years between the East coast and the West coast partaking in skiing and yacht work. I have a wife Susan MacNeil who hails from Hanover and Franconia NH and two boys Angus  and Geo. Ellis . We live on the Cape in West Falmouth. We spend our winter weekends and vacations in Franconia NH skiing and working (for passes) at Cannon Mtn (lots of room come ski or hike we sleep 14) and summers sailing and beaching. Tough I know but.... I've spent the last 30 years working in boatyards, running boatyards and owned my own yard for 14 years. I spent the last eight years building Southport 30's a small lobster/pleasure boat in Boothbay Maine with a friend and back on sunny Cape Cod building two very custom wood composit "Huckins 36's" Designed by Frank Huckins of PT Boat fame, and a wood composit 54' Jim Taylor design racing/cruising sailboat. (See pics) Then I retired.... Not making much money but having fun.
I 'm driving boats for a small Environmental Co, tugboating and teaching sailing as time and need allow. My Three brothers and I own a small grocery store in Woods Hole called the "Woods Hole Market" Stop in for a sandwich some time if your on the Cape or drop me a note if you've the desire. Cheers, Ship

1970 - 1973 - Samuel W. Meek.  ,  E-mail:  smeek@sourcegrp.com , Finished college after heading off to Evergreen in Olympia WA. from Stowe. Started a career on Wall Street and moved from Ct. to Florida. Married and moved family to Sun Valley where life is terrific. Unfortunately divorce and circumstance took me back to Florida for few years and gradually moved back here to Ct. Life is good and being almost 50 years old I can't complain. Memories of my time at Stowe are wonderful and occasionally get back up to the Mountain for skiing. Stops at the Matterhorn bring back those days of glory when we were young and full of life and all it had to offer. Cheers to fellow alums and all those that attended a very special place that gave many of us a love of nature and a zest for enjoying life to it's fullest:) SWM
1971- Bob Graham, Email: bglg84@bellsouth.net , Briefly attended Stowe as a freshman I think in 1971. I wound up on academic probation and was bounced out after one semester. It was a treat to find the website. although my stay was a short one I look back on those days as some of the best. My roommate was Ira Weis. some of the other folks I remember were Ian Leahy who I did some volunteer work with at a shelter or daycare in the northeast kingdom over Christmas break. Tony Stedem (not sure I spelled that correctly) was part of my group on the resource trek through the mountains. Steve Blair rings a bell as well. I also remember Ma Kellogg............does anyone have the recipe for that granola based hardtack called floor tile she supplied to the kids on the resource trek?

All in all I enjoyed my time and my class mates and I credit Stowe with providing me with some basic academic and independence skills. I'd like to hear from anyone from that time. I've added a link to my business site. In addition to product design, I'm a member of the faculty at RISD. www.nathanielsmithdesign.com, - Ned

1972 - 1974 - Jory Sutton Mason, E-mail: jorysm@sprintmail.com , Since I graduated in three years, at 16, I took a year off to live in an Ashram and illustrate some yoga books for kids. I attended the University of Iowa for one year and then transferred to The New England School of Art and Design in Boston. I planned to be a fine artist or illustrator, but got my first real job in advertising and was hooked. Now 27 years (yikes) later I'm running my own freelance design business out of my home in Halifax, MA. I've been married for 20 years, and have 2 kids Amy (17) and Scott (13). I'm proud to say that they still like me, but I'm not holding my breath. We ski, camp, and spend a lot of time with our horse Binny. I am also spending a lot of time working on an art book on my Grandfather, John R. Neill, who illustrated the series of 29 original Wizard of Oz books among other things. Still haven't convinced a publisher yet though... The site is www.johnrneill.net  I have mixed memories from the Stowe School. The first year most students were convinced I was a narc and I was terribly lonely. By my second and last year, I was trusted and called upon numerous times to help kids in the middle of the night who were having a bad trip. At least by then I was a little more connected and felt better. My best memories are cross country skiing alone at night, and playing in the pottery shed. Anyone remember when Edie and I were on "Week in the woods" canoeing, and we were in the lead, not believing the guide we were reading (that said do a 2 mile portage) and we went right over the dam? It was like maybe 28 degree water and we were in for at least 45 mins. Edie and I were both pretty scared but we finally got out and we walked until we found a farm house. They wouldn't let us in, but called a fire truck...., and we spent the night huddled together at the fire station. Penny, the pottery teacher and all of the others got out on the other side of the Conn. river and thought we were dead. Makes a good story, anyway huh? I look forward to seeing everyone in August.
1972 - 1975 - Jenny Fawell - Jenny passed away on November 1, 1993. She loved her time at Stowe School. After leaving, she finally graduated from Wheaton Christian Academy (the Dean was a friend of the Family) and went on to work at the Board of Trade in Chicago. A cancer survivor for 16 years Jenny never backed off living life full bore which is how everyone probably remembers her. She made it clear she did not want to be forgotten. We never have. I thought you, her friends, would like to know what happened to her and why you might not recognize her at the reunion as she will be there in spirit. Thanks, Bill Fawell, wwfawell@yahoo.com

1973- Jefferson Mack, Email: frotteur99@yahoo.com, After Stowe I went to college at Skidmore studying jewelry, theatre and philosophy. Did rock and roll lighting design for several years. Toured with B-52s, Modern English, Talking Heads, Thomas Dolby. Lots of fun but many occupational hazards like hamburgers, alcohol, drugs and no sleep. Lived in England for two years, blacksmithing at an historical recreation museum (had to speak with an English accent) and created an English version of LL Bean, resurrecting the Real English Corduroys and selling them at Camden Flea Market. Found an old factory in Yorkshire that had made pants for the British army for 150 years and still had the old patterns. Unfortunately, we were underfunded and had absolutely no idea what we were doing. Got some nice corduroys out of the deal, though. Moved to San Francisco in 1985 and became a building contractor, working on historic Victorians. In 1994 I gave my carpentry tools away and went back to my first love, blacksmithing, Now I run a small blacksmith/metal artist business in SF. I fabricate custom commissions of architectural wrought iron for residential and corporate installations. Two kids-Peter, 13 and Sofia, 11. I play guitar and sing for the kindergarten classes and kayak all around SF Bay. I raise chickens in the city and garden in my back yard. www.mackmetal.com,  (see long letter on 'News and Letters' page
1973 - 1975- Paul Foulon , Email: pfoulon@verizon.net, I was farting around on google earth and thought to look at the old red school house, saw it wasn't there, did a search and was surprised to find this site. Great to read about the alumni and staff. I settled in Oregon in '79 after knocking around for a while and have been here ever since. I am a semi retired contractor living very comfortably with my first wife of 16 years. We are very happy together, she's the girl of my dreams.
I'm an avid mineral collector (self collecting and silver picking) and student of mineralogy/crystallography. I'd like to wish the alumni and staff of the Stowe School all the best, it was a very special place.

After that I went out to work at Snowbird (Utah) for a year that turned into 25 years. Worked various jobs until I moved to the ski patrol in fall of 86’. Spent summers working first at Outward bound on the Yampa, Green and Colorado rivers for 2 years then moved to a commercial outfitter as guide for another six. Used my degree for lectures on botany and geology. Met my wife, massage therapist and artist, on the Yampa in 86’and we now have two children, Emily (15) and Zach (13). Spent several other summers working for Ut. Dept. of Ag. in the gypsy moth trapping crew hiking every day to put out traps to figure where the populations were. Went back to school, another degree in computer assisted drafting, and now work for a civil engineering firm doing design and drafting. So, I still get to play patrolman on weekends and go up early on avalanche control mornings so I don’t go nuts behind a desk. Trying to keep active outdoors as much as possible fly fishing, golfing, biking, skiing, rafting, hiking, fossil hunting and camping with the family. We have an acre yard here in Salt Lake and I can usually be found in the garden until dark most evenings. I still do stained glass that Tom Haney taught me at Stowe, my wife draws the patterns. Had a small heart “event” a couple of years ago (if I wasn’t healthy it would have killed me) they put a couple of stents in and voila! Good as new! Next!! Back to skiing within two weeks, oh well, so much for family genetics. Good to see this site and hope to hear from some old friends.

In 1985 I became a river guide; learned to row on the Grand Canyon, moved to Moab, worked in Costa Rica. In 1998 I became a sea kayak guide too and did a season in Baja and another in Belize. All multi-day, no resupply, solo guide expeditions...see, I never grew out of Stowe. In 1987 I contracted Systemic Lupus Erythmatosis and by 1991 was completely paralyzed, but I got good drugs, taught myself to walk and got a master's degree in Quaternary Sciences (big word for being a mammoth hunter, my degree was in 4 sciences and I excavated paleo-environmental sites blahblahblah i.e. Mammoths and man) Today I live in Big Bend National Park, have 4 dogs, one cat, two titanium knees, and have rebuilt a hundred year old limestone ruin in an old Mexican Ghost Town. After rowing the river here on and off for ten years I am starting a booking agency for Mexican outdoor expedition trips from my house. 1974 - 1975 - Bill Coleman - Email: none "After graduation, my interest in alternative education continued to evolve with undergraduate work at Franconia College, (until its’ untimely closure in 1978) and then at Goddard College. A lot of radical politics permeated the entire curriculum at Franconia, and Goddard provided further exposure to alternative technologies and design that Stowe School faculty member Cutter Wyman had begun opening my eyes to. Until 1986, addiction to alcohol was a severe hindrance, and for several more years a few other drugs had probably outlived their usefulness, but lingered. Beginning in 1992, my mind cleared in full recovery and I worked for seven years as a youth counselor and therapeutic gardening facilitator at various residential schools in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Twice I pursued third party campaigns for Vermont Lieutenant Governor, (1996 and 1998) but was very discouraged by media censorship.
Since 1984, I have maintained my primary residence in beautiful Newark, VT. (Northeast Kingdom) and have lived for many years with virtually total reliance on renewable energy from the sun and wind while relying on wood heat. In 197 I received a M.S. in Community Psychology from Springfield College and have never married. I keep a sizable organic garden, and have a strong interest in meditation, while practicing both Quakerism and Buddhism. Mail still arrives to me at Po Box 28, East Haven, VT and it would be great to hear from anyone.

A couple of those years were with Maurice Reed (who could forget Maurice!). Worked as General Manager of a Rock Climbing manufacturing company here in Flagstaff, and then as a sports marketing agent for Patagonia for 9 years. That job was a cross between Jerry Maguire and Dilbert! I just quit and moved back to Flagstaff, AZ this summer with my wife and two sons, they are Max, age 9 and Joshua,  age 5. I met my wife at Evergreen and she does Public Health work. We are both unemployed but don't care because we are so happy to be out of the rat race in S. California. I wasted my ankle in a bad accident this past May while climbing in the Alaska Range, so I am still recovering from that. I feel really lucky as we have lived all over the west in the last 15 years: Bellingham, WA, Berkeley, CA, Bozeman, MT, Truckee, CA, Ventura, CA and now back in Flagstaff. Come for a visit anytime. It is good to hear from all of you,  as so many of my buddies from Stowe and Evergreen had so many struggles with drugs and alcohol. It's always a matter of self-control, eh? What else? we love to do camping and climbing trips in our Volkswagen van, that's why we moved back. We have owned three of them over the years. There is so much beautiful country to walk in and enjoy the desert solitude. We visit Vermont once a year when we are visiting Sharon's family.
1977-1979 - Cindy Cobb Graham, Email: tncgraham4@juno.com , I went to stowe 77-79 and did a stint abroad but came back to graduate in 79. Anyway, I wanted you to be able to post a faculty note about Gary Hertz. He was at Stowe 77-80 or 81 and taught math and Latin and did some admin stuff too. He passed away from complications of a stroke in June out in Washington. He was a tremendous teacher and a huge influence on many students.( I was in touch with his brother recently.) So, a really sad note - he will be missed and fondly remembered. I will send my bio someday too. Have you ever heard form Cathy MiIler? I wish we could have a place to post these type of questions on the Stowe website. Its a hackers paradise though for some reason. Thanks for doing the site it was fun to read about some of my old friends.
Cheers, Cindy Cobb Graham , Rockingham, Vermont

"Stowe School endures" Let's see... Ian Leahy is back in VT. You'll have to ask him the details. He ran into Tino  in Montpelier. I guess Tino's been around for a long time. Like Mallinson, he still gets out. I do too. I'm so lucky to be living in Blue Vermont. Just a hop and skip from Montreal. Snow in the mountains and a quiet village life. Have you heard about the reunion? John De Ronde '67 seems to be planning one in Stowe for next summer. Sounds like fun to me. We could have several venues, A keg party for the die hards and yoga or something mellow for the recovered. (I'll have to observe both from a distance as I don't drink but I do munch out too much to enjoy yoga) No matter what, it would be fun to see folks again. So how do I update my bio? It's a little brief and a very dated. And can I get a link to my summer rental cottage in Fletcher (500 a week, 100 feet of lakefront, wilderness location-by Vermont standards-, furnished, linens, dishes and staples, hot water, UV water filter system). I will send some support. Thanks for keeping this going. "Roberts"

1979 - 1981 - Matt Sargent, Email: pastimes@madriver.com , Hey you cool cats....those were the days, eh? I still look back on the Stowe School days with very fond memories. I graduated in 1981 leaving the school with a woman named Tana Acton who some of you may remember was a junior dance/art teacher at SS. I know, I know, teacher/student relationships are taboo, but, you know what? We stayed together for almost 8 years after I graduated. I guess at the time we were meant to be. Anyway, after many years of traveling and living all over the country I've found myself living right back here in beautiful VT. I'm in Warren about 30 miles south of Stowe. In fact I remember coming down here to the Mad River Valley in the SS days to white water canoe. Loved it then, love it even more now. I live here with my beautiful wife Nancy and my two girls Cassidy (12) and Jessa (11). We've got 30 acres, a beautiful house (which I built), and a very strong tie to our community. We actually hosted a reunion in 2001, (kind of surprised nobody mentioned it on the site so far) and were able to reacquaint ourselves with some old school chums. It was a trip and it was definitely a good time. I now own my own design/build company specializing in post and beam construction. Most of the building I do is speculative. Build it first sell it later is my new motto. I encourage any of you old timers to give me a shout so we can reminisce about the old days. Maybe tip one back and tell a few tall tales....after all we're full of those, aren't we?
